Disney's live-action remake of Moana hits theaters this Friday, and while the film may face criticism for its uncanny visuals, one element has captured the internet's imagination: Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's wig.
Johnson reprises his role as Maui, the shapeshifting demigod known for his long, flowing hair. The actor, however, is famously bald, creating a dilemma for the filmmakers.
The Wig That Broke the Internet
The solution was to put Johnson in a wig, but the result has been met with widespread mockery.
Memes describe the hairpiece as "fighting gravity, the wind, and its own contract obligations" and looking like a "shake-n-go wig from Spirit Halloween."
Johnson has taken the jokes in good humor, telling a red carpet reporter that the memes made him laugh "so fucking hard."
This isn't Johnson's first wig role.
In 2025's The Smashing Machine, he wore a wig that went largely unnoticed, likely due to heavy prosthetics.
In 2001's The Mummy Returns, he also sported a wig, but that film's poor CGI may have overshadowed it.
The difference, critics say, is the artificiality of the Moana wig. It appears made of nylon, itchy, and requiring constant maintenance that Johnson's character wouldn't have time for.
Despite the mockery, Moana is expected to be a financial success, potentially leading to a live-action sequel. If so, fans may hope for a bald Maui next time.
