Maja Chwalinska booked her place in the semifinals of the WTA 500 tournament in Singapore after a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win over Elise Mertens.
The Polish player needed just two sets to see off the world number 19 on Friday, September 25, 2026.
Chwalinska had reached the quarterfinals with dominant victories over Kristina Sramkova and Nadiia Olijnykova.
How the Match Unfolded
The opening set turned at 3-2 when Chwalinska secured a break after Mertens committed a double fault.
She kept her momentum to take the first set 6-2.
In the second set, Chwalinska broke Mertens' serve immediately in the opening game and raced to a 3-0 lead.
Mertens then requested a medical timeout on court.
Although the Belgian held serve twice to close to 2-5, Chwalinska finished the match in her favor.
The result adds another head-to-head win for Chwalinska over Mertens, whom she previously beat 6-4, 6-0 at the 2026 French Open.
After her earlier victory over Olijnykova in the round of 16, Chwalinska spoke about her approach.
"I've known her for a long time, we had the opportunity to train together. I knew what to expect," said Chwalinska, a BKT Bielsko-Biala club representative.
"I knew it could be tough and that I had to be patient. I am very happy with the advancement."
She also explained her strategy against the Ukrainian opponent.
"I was patient, choosing good moments to attack. I think that was the key to victory," she added.
"On top of that, I was focused, which I am proud of."
Chwalinska will next face the winner of the quarterfinal between Mirra Andreeva and Leylah Fernandez in the semifinals.
