Starbucks is closing 250 underperforming locations across the United States and Canada this week.

The move trims roughly 1% of its regional footprint as Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol advances a corporate turnaround strategy.

The closures affect a small share of the coffee chain's North American presence, which totaled 18,371 locations last quarter.

That compares with 18,734 stores in the same period a year earlier.

Performance and Experience Drive Store Reviews

Company leadership tied the operational shift to performance benchmarks and customer experience metrics across its coffeehouses.

Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams said the company carefully reviewed its North America coffeehouse portfolio.

He said it identified locations where it could not consistently deliver the experience it wants for customers and partners, or where it saw no path to acceptable financial performance.

Alongside the closures, Starbucks is accelerating a physical transformation of its remaining estate.

It targets at least 1,500 cafe redesigns by the end of fiscal year 2026 to restore seating and a warm ambiance.

The company is also expanding its global technical infrastructure.

It announced plans to launch a technology hub in India next year to support its broader operational changes.

Financial metrics show signs of momentum under the turnaround plan.

Third-quarter same-store sales grew 7.9%, surpassing Wall Street expectations of 5.7% compiled by Bloomberg.

Industry experts view the strategic consolidation as a positive tactical step for the company's operational balance sheet and earnings trajectory.

William Blair equity analyst Sharon Zackfia said the retail network adjustment could prove modestly beneficial to same-store sales growth going forward.

Starbucks shares have gained 10% over the past year, trailing the broader S&P 500 index growth of 15% during the same timeframe.
