At least 12 detainees at a federal immigration jail in Aurora, Colorado, have contracted tuberculosis, prompting quarantine measures for those affected.
The outbreak at the Aurora facility has raised significant health concerns among the detainee population.
Mass Testing Reveals Rising Cases
Mass testing was conducted on Saturday for 88 individuals in one of the pods, with 12 testing positive — a rise from a single case just three days prior.
Instead of isolating the infected individuals, guards reportedly kept them in the same area as those who were not sick.
All detainees in the pod were required to remain in quarantine for at least a week.
Facility Conditions Worsen
Conditions within the facility have worsened, as the air conditioning in the pod failed on Sunday.
Detainees were provided with electric fans while outside temperatures soared to 96°F (36°C) during a heat advisory.
One detainee, who has been at the facility since December, described the situation as "uncomfortable," though he noted that some individuals were receiving medication.
