The U. S.
Department of Energy has removed at least 1,662 webpages that provided critical advice on energy efficiency and heat safety, according to a Guardian analysis.
The deletions occurred as of July 3, following proposed changes to energy efficiency standards for home appliances.
The removed content included guidance on managing electricity use during heatwaves, a vital resource as temperatures rise.
Andrew deLaski, executive director at the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, stressed the importance of such standards.
"Having a functioning air conditioner is a health and safety issue for the elderly, for folks with health conditions, and for the very young," he said.
The exact timing of the deletions is unclear, but 18 pages were last live on July 1 and 2, 2026.
This coincides with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani's suggestion to set air conditioners to 78 degrees to ease pressure on the electrical grid.
The removed pages had over 160,000 page views in the past month.
Critics argue these actions are part of a systematic effort to undermine consumer information and deregulate the energy sector.
