Skywatchers across the United States will observe the full Buck Moon this week as it reaches peak illumination on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 10:36 a.
m. EDT.
According to the U. S.
Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications Department, the peak occurs during daylight hours.
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are the prime viewing times as the moon rises above the eastern horizon.
Regional timing for the lunar peak varies across time zones, reaching 9:35 a. m.
CDT and 7:36 a. m.
PDT.
Because the peak takes place during the day, observers in cities like Houston, Oakland, and Memphis will get their best views low in the east-southeast sky shortly after sunset or during the early morning hours before moonset.
The moon will also appear nearly full on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Origin of the Name
The annual event earns its moniker from traditional Native American designations, specifically from the Algonquin people, as recorded by The Old Farmer's Almanac.
The name references the time of year when young male deer, or bucks, rapidly regrow their antlers after shedding them in late winter.
Other traditional designations for July's full moon include the Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, the Cree's Feather Moulting Moon, and the Tlingit's Salmon Moon.
Astrological Significance
Astrologically, this year's Buck Moon occurs in the air sign of Aquarius, directly opposite Leo.
Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas provided insight on the sign's celestial alignment during an interview with Good Morning America.
"This Air sign's energy will be infused into our lives," Thomas said.

"[The full moon] will push you to explore horizons beyond your wildest dreams.

Matters of personal trust come into focus for Cancer signs during the lunar peak.
"Intimacy and how closely you trust another will be spot lit at this time," Thomas said.
"In fact, you could notice that you and someone you are attached to have to discuss some serious plans ahead.
If you are aligned, you could feel ready to merge closer -- in body, mind and spirit."
Partnerships take center stage for Leo as the full moon lights up the sky.
"The full moon will energize you to be attracted more closely together like magnets -- or split apart like a firecracker," Thomas explained.
"Happy connections will see union, commitment, an engagement or even marriage."
For Virgo, the lunar event points toward high productivity and shifting responsibilities.
"You're often one of the busiest and most productive zodiac signs of all, Virgo, and this full moon will add even more on your plate," Thomas said.
"You could be tidying up a big career or job-related project or even leaving one employer behind to begin with another."
Romance takes priority for Libra during the mid-summer full moon.
"As the full moon ignites within the sky, you could feel like you've found that mysterious pot of gold at the end of [the rainbow]," Thomas said.
The Buck Moon coincides with an active astronomical period featuring three concurrent meteor showers: the Southern delta Aquariids, the alpha Capricornids, and the Perseids.
Both the Southern delta Aquariids and alpha Capricornids peak on Wednesday and Thursday.
However, astronomers warn that bright moonlight may obscure smaller meteors.
Meanwhile, the popular Perseids meteor shower will reach its peak on August 12 and 13, featuring fast, bright fireballs best viewed from high-elevation, inland locations away from urban light pollution.
