Authorities in Grenada and family members are searching for Elizabeth "Liz" Waddell, a 44-year-old North Carolina physical therapist who went missing after going for a swim at Grand Anse Beach on July 22, 2026.
Police and relatives have appealed to local residents, fishermen, and boat operators along the island's southern coastline to report any sightings or information regarding her whereabouts.
The Royal Grenada Police issued an official call for assistance shortly after her disappearance to aid local search efforts.
"We (especially) appeal to fishermen, boat operators, and residents along the southern coastline to report any sightings or relevant information that may assist in locating Ms. Waddell," the Royal Grenada Police wrote in a statement.
Waddell was visiting the St. George region of Grenada with a companion when she vanished in the water during the afternoon.
Her husband, Cailen Waddell, requested assistance on social media platforms as he prepared to travel to the island to join search crews.
"If any of you have connections to the island – can you please share the following with your contacts there?"
Cailen Waddell wrote. "Liz went missing in the afternoon on Wednesday.
I am on my way there now to help search.
I expect nothing less than Liz’s safe return – so please (send) your love, light, thoughts, and prayers our way."
Family friend Amanda Romano-Harmon stated that Waddell's vacation companion alerted her husband after Waddell failed to return from the water, prompting an immediate missing persons report since Waddell left her personal belongings behind.
"She was last seen swimming along Grand Anse Beach on Wednesday afternoon," Amanda Romano-Harmon said.
Romano-Harmon noted that family members are attempting to maintain hope while searching for any potential clues surrounding the incident.
"She was starting to panic because she knew Liz didn't have her phone or anything with her, and so they wound up filing a missing persons report right away," Amanda Romano-Harmon said.
Friend and community members described Waddell, the founder of Art of Movement Physical Therapy in Cary, North Carolina, as adventurous and outgoing.
"They're broken up," Amanda Romano-Harmon said. "They're trying to figure out anything – no stone left unturned.
They're looking for all the details, all the clues.
They're just trying to hold it together as best as they can, and we're trying to be as supportive as we possibly can for them, because it's unimaginable.
We're just trying to keep them calm and trying to help them in any way that we can."
Prior statements from Waddell's business page outlined her professional focus on health and rehabilitation.
"She'll see kids playing in the park as she's walking or exercising or whatever, and she'll start kicking the ball with them.
Everybody's a friend for Liz," Amanda Romano-Harmon said.
Waddell previously detailed her physical therapy mission on social media platforms.
"Liz helps active people get out of pain so they feel stronger, healthier and able to do what they love," Liz Waddell wrote.
Waddell holds a doctorate in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her family launched findliz.
