A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Boston diverted to Porto, Portugal, after smoke filled the cabin during a transatlantic journey from Barcelona.
The Airbus A330-300 carried 296 people, including 283 passengers and 13 crew members.
The aircraft departed Barcelona around 3:15 p. m.
local time and landed safely at Porto Airport about two and a half hours later.
Emergency medical services met the plane on the tarmac.
Local civil protection authorities reported that up to 14 passengers required medical attention.
Paramedics treated eight individuals directly on the runway, while up to four passengers suffering from smoke inhalation were taken to a local hospital with light injuries.
Delta Responds to Diversion
Delta Air Lines acknowledged the diversion of Flight 251, stating that the crew diverted to Porto following a reported mechanical issue.
The airline did not immediately confirm the underlying cause of the cabin smoke.
A Delta spokesperson said, "Delta flight 251 from Barcelona to Boston diverted to Porto, Portugal following a reported mechanical issue.
The flight landed safely, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels as we work to get them to Boston as safely and quickly as possible."
The airline stated that staff worked directly with affected passengers to coordinate rebooking and secure alternative transportation to their final destinations in Boston.
