Former sister wives Janelle Brown and Meri Brown clashed over the $1.5 million Coyote Pass land sale during the season 21 premiere of Sister Wives on TLC on October 4, 2026.
The tension arose following the departure of patriarch Kody Brown and his sole remaining wife, Robyn Brown, from the reality series.
Kody's exit comes after his divorces from Christine Brown in 2021, Janelle in 2022, and Meri in 2023.
The premiere highlighted ongoing friction among the former wives as they navigated post-separation life, financial settlements, and family estrangement.
During the trailer for the new season, former wives expressed shock over the casting change after 16 years on television.
"I was actually surprised when I was told that Kody and Robyn weren't coming back to the show," admitted Meri Brown, former wife of Kody Brown.
Janelle noted that she was "flabbergasted" by the development.
"I didn't know how to process it all," acknowledged Christine Brown, former wife of Kody Brown.
In the premiere episode, Janelle criticized Kody's previous attempts to make amends during the season 20 reunion broadcast in January.
"I feel like the apology tour was in the end something he was trying to redeem himself with," said Janelle Brown, former wife of Kody Brown.
"And I don't think it was necessarily that sincere because there's been no contact since. And he very publicly [torpedoed] my character afterwards.
… So I — f*** him."
Janelle rejected accusations made by Kody regarding the April 2025 sale of their shared Coyote Pass property in Arizona.
"As a parting gift because Kody and Robyn [Brown] aren't filming with us anymore, he felt like he should make up this story that I had somehow tried to go behind Meri's back," Janelle told former sister wife Christine Brown.
She stressed that the claims were false despite the timing of Kody's statements.
"Months after the deal is closed he starts talking about how I was doing a backdoor deal with him.
… It was not true," Janelle said.
Meri voiced confusion over the real estate dispute during discussions with her peers.
"I don't know all the details," confessed Meri Brown, while explaining she was under the impression Janelle and Kody planned to sell the land without her consent and give her "however much they felt like I was owed."
Meri noted that Kody and Robyn were "not willing" to discuss the matter, calling it a red flag.
"She and I are not best friends. We don't have full trust.
There might be things that she holds back," admitted Meri.
Janelle defended her conduct regarding the financial deal during a conversation with Meri.
"I always tried to be very fair and very transparent in my business dealings," claimed Janelle.
She noted the personal toll of the allegations.
"This accusation not only felt very personal, like, a final F-you as he was leaving," confessed Janelle.
"But everyone is believing him and Meri's even like, 'I don't know.' I'm like, 'What the hell?'"
Addressing Meri directly in person, Janelle accused Kody of stirring up conflict.
"Kody's stirring the pot, even after the fact. I'm like, 'Leave it alone,'" Janelle told Meri.
"But he just can't help himself."
Janelle further detailed Kody's alleged financial proposals.
"He had all these things about, 'Maybe I'll just sell and I'll hold some money in reserve for Meri in reserve so when she basically does what I want her to do, I'll give her the money,'" claimed Janelle.
"There was so much threatening. … I'm still kinda stunned, Meri."
Janelle added that Kody was "suggesting this from the beginning" to maintain control.
"It was more like he was saying one-off to me," alleged Janelle. "It was making little veil threats.
It got really way more complicated than it needed to be and I don't know why."
Meri remained uncertain about the situation.
"I don't understand any of it," confessed Meri.
Janelle reiterated her innocence to resolve the matter.
"I was not trying to cut you out of the deal," insisted Janelle.
She pushed to close the subject.
"It's done. Aren't you glad it's done?"
asked Janelle.
Meri accepted the conclusion despite remaining questions.
"I appreciate you," she told Janelle.
Later, Meri reflected on the conflicting narratives.
"I'm not taking a side with Janelle or Kody and Robyn, because to be honest with you, every single one of us in humanity will tell our stories to make us look better," Meri told the cameras.
Janelle expressed relief in a separate confessional.
"I just want this thing to be over. I thought it was.
Apparently not, it's the gift that keeps on giving. Thank you, Kody Brown," admitted Janelle.
"I have said what I needed to say. I am sincere.
I was not trying to double deal."
Beyond the property dispute, Kody remains estranged from the majority of his 18 children.
While he maintains relationships with Robyn's children, Janelle estimated he is alienated from 90 to 95 percent of his total offspring, including kids with Meri, Christine, and Janelle, whose son Garrison Brown died by suicide in 2024.
Daughter Mykelti Padron discussed her distant relationship with Kody during a November appearance on the Pop Psych YouTube series.
"Right now, we don't have a very deep relationship," acknowledged Mykelti Padron. "We're not talking, but we're not not talking."
She explained her condition for a complete reconciliation.
"It's hard because with me, I'm a package deal," she continued. "You gotta treat my whole family nice, you gotta treat my kids nice.
You gotta talk to all of us, you can't just have me."
Mykelti detailed potential conversations regarding her siblings' estrangement.
"I'm going to ask him, 'Hey what's going on with you and Truely? What's going on with you and Ysabel?
What's going on with you and Savannah?'" noted Mykelti.
"And he's going to be like, 'I want to have a relationship with you right now. My relationship with them is separate.'"
She summarized her father's approach to the family dynamic.
"He wants to figure out each relationship individually as they go," said Mykelti, "and I want to be like, 'Well why can't we all just get together be happy and love each other?'"
