Alex Ovechkin will retire from professional hockey after the 2026-27 NHL season, ending a 22-year career spent entirely with the Washington Capitals.

The 41-year-old announced his decision to teammates in the locker room on Monday, October 5, 2026, before the team issued an official statement ahead of its home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Capital One Arena.

Ovechkin signed a one-year contract extension in the offseason after settling the decision with his family over the summer.

That deal turns his 22nd NHL campaign into a final farewell tour for the league's all-time goals leader.

"It's sad, but it is what it is," Ovechkin said. "It's hard, but let's enjoy it and let's do some special things this year."

The Russian star enters his final year with 929 career regular-season goals.

He surpassed Wayne Gretzky's long-standing record of 894 goals in April 2025 and sits three assists away from tying Nicklas Bäckström's franchise record of 759 assists.

"I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it's the right decision," Ovechkin said.

He said it was important to make the announcement before the first home game so he could thank everyone around the game who has been important to him and his family.

"I wouldn't have been able to achieve everything I have in my life without them," he said.

Ovechkin added that he is excited about the season with his teammates and will do everything possible to make the year special.

He also said he plans to enjoy every moment with his family, his boys, the fans and everyone who has been part of his hockey career.

In his locker room address, the former first overall pick from the 2004 NHL Draft reflected on his longevity and urged his teammates to maximize the upcoming season.

"For me, for my family, it's very important that you guys know first," Ovechkin said.

He encouraged the group to make the playoffs and enjoy the moment, telling young and experienced players alike that time flies.

"It seems like yesterday I was here my first year, and right now this is my 22nd year," he said.

Selected first overall in 2004, Ovechkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 2005-06 and three Hart Memorial Trophies as league MVP.

He also claimed nine Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophies and led the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup championship in 2018 while winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

Washington retooled its roster for Ovechkin's final run by acquiring Jordan Kyrou and Alex Tuch via trades and signing forward Boone Jenner and defenseman Vincent Desharnais in free agency.

Ovechkin scored 32 goals in 2025-26.

The Capitals opened the regular season with a 5-2 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes and a 3-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

They return home Wednesday to face long-time rival Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.
