Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule appeared as himself in the season finale of HBO's DC Universe series Lanterns, which aired on October 4, 2026.
The cameo was part of a strategic effort to boost national brand visibility for the Cornhuskers football program.
Set in the fictionalized town of Rushville, Nebraska, the series frequently incorporates local college football references.
Rhule filmed his scene during a summer vacation in 2025 in the Los Angeles area, working alongside showrunner and Nebraska native Chris Mundy.
In the brief scene, Rhule visits a high school game to recruit standout quarterback Noah Macon, played by Shea Pritchard, and hands him a Nebraska team hat to signify his commitment.
Rhule addressed the national media exposure on October 5, 2026, while preparing his undefeated 5-0 Nebraska team for an upcoming matchup against seventh-ranked Indiana.
"He asked if I would go out and film that role, so I did," Rhule said.
"Great show, by the way, I try to catch it here and there.
I don't know that I'll be taking my talents to Broadway any time soon, but really cool to see Nebraska on HBO and have a chance to do it."
"My daughters were probably more fired up than I was. They were very concerned I would not get my lines right.
It was a really cool experience."
The coach noted that the brief midnight shoot required only a single line of dialogue but delivered immediate results among prospective student-athletes across the country.
"Any time somebody has asked me to do something nationally, it's about getting our brand out there…I had recruits texting me that they saw me on HBO," Rhule said.
"I think part of this job…is to continue to put Nebraska out there in the forefront of everything."
Rhule said he remains focused on coaching as Nebraska prepares to host Indiana in a battle of undefeated Big Ten teams.
