The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the New York Yankees 5-2 on Monday night at Tropicana Field, taking a 2-0 lead in the American League Division Series.

New York committed four defensive errors, which Tampa Bay converted into a decisive advantage.

The Yankees fell behind in the first inning when three defensive mistakes allowed the Rays to take a 1-0 lead on a fielder's choice by Junior Caminero off starter Cam Schlittler.

It marked the fifth postseason game in Yankees franchise history with four or more errors.

New York designated hitter Ben Rice temporarily tied the game in the fourth with a solo home run off Rays starter Freddy Peralta.

The Yankees later loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but Cody Bellinger flied out to end the threat without scoring.

Tampa Bay's Four-Run Fifth Inning

Tampa Bay broke the tie with a four-run fifth inning, featuring RBI production from Liam Hicks, Chandler Simpson, and Richie Palacios.

The Rays forced Schlittler out of the game after generating 31 balls in play while striking out just twice during his outing.

Following the offensive push, team members reflected on the momentum inside the home clubhouse.

"You mean about the Yankees?" asked Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Freddy Peralta.

After clarification regarding the postgame question, the starter expressed enthusiasm about his team's performance.

"Oh, us!" said Peralta.

The pitcher further emphasized his confidence in the roster's capabilities following the win.

"We are amazing in general, man," said Peralta.

In the field, Tampa Bay relied heavily on persistent pressure and base running to stretch the lead against the visitors.

"That's our brand of baseball," said Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson.

The team's strategic focus centered on putting balls in play to force defensive miscues from the opponent.

"We want to be suffocating as an offense on opposing pitchers and defenses, because everybody we have has the ability to get on base, put the ball in play," said Simpson.

Rice hit his second solo home run of the night in the eighth inning to narrow the margin to 5-2, but the Yankees failed to mount a late comeback.

New York now faces elimination as the series shifts to the Bronx for Game 3, featuring Max Fried against Rays pitcher Nick Martinez.
