The Milwaukee Bucks signed Johni Broome to a non-guaranteed training camp agreement and waived John Butler Jr. on October 6.
The moves came after practice and before the team traveled to Oklahoma City for a preseason game on October 7.
Broome, a 24-year-old forward, now has an opportunity to compete for a roster spot before the 2026-27 NBA season.
Broome's Path to Milwaukee
Philadelphia selected Broome with the No. 35 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.
As a rookie, he appeared in 11 games for the 76ers, totaling 10 points and 16 rebounds in 55 minutes while shooting 4-of-24 from the field.
He spent most of the season with the Delaware Blue Coats, Philadelphia's G League affiliate.
In 26 G League games, he averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 blocks in 32.8 minutes per contest.
His G League season ended early after he underwent a partial meniscectomy in late February to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee.
He later returned during the NBA playoffs for limited minutes in two second-round losses to the New York Knicks.
In college, Broome averaged 2.5 blocks per game at Morehead State from 2020-22 and Auburn from 2022-25.
His transition to the NBA produced limited offensive numbers during his rookie appearances.
Philadelphia traded Broome to the Los Angeles Clippers during the offseason in a salary-related move connected to Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's arrival.
The Clippers waived him less than two weeks before his Milwaukee signing.
The Clippers remain responsible for Broome's fully guaranteed $2.15 million salary for 2026-27.
The Bucks could convert his agreement to a two-way contract before opening night if it contains Exhibit 10 language.
Milwaukee also has the option of assigning Broome to its G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, if he is waived before the regular season.
An affiliate arrangement could make him eligible for a bonus of up to $91,000 after spending at least 60 days with the Herd.
Butler's departure cleared the roster spot for Broome.
Butler had played five Summer League games and was expected to return to the Wisconsin Herd after averaging 9.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks there.
He did not appear in Milwaukee's October 5 preseason opener against Minnesota.
The Bucks now have Broome available as the preseason roster competition continues.
