Tatum O'Neal has offered a quiet update on her recovery, posting a new selfie on Instagram six years after a stroke that nearly took her life.
The 62-year-old Oscar-winning actress appeared relaxed and smiling in the photograph, which she captioned with a single word: "Hope."
The post drew supportive replies from family, friends and fans, including her children Emily McEnroe and Kevin McEnroe.
Emily wrote, "Beauty mom," while Kevin added, "I love you, ma."
Actor Matthew Modine also responded, writing, "Hello you!! big big love to you!
Hope springs eternal." Another well-wisher said there was "an abundance of love" for the actress.
A Long Road Back After a 2020 Medical Emergency
The messages come after several difficult years for O'Neal, who has spoken publicly about addiction and the physical challenges that followed her medical emergency in May 2020.
According to accounts of her health crisis, she suffered a stroke after a prescription drug overdose at her Los Angeles home.
She had been dealing with chronic pain linked to rheumatoid arthritis and was found unconscious before being taken to a hospital.
The emergency involved cardiac arrest and seizures, and O'Neal spent roughly six weeks in a coma.
After regaining consciousness, she could neither walk nor speak and needed extensive rehabilitation to recover her abilities.
In a 2023 interview with Variety, O'Neal discussed the ordeal and the physical and emotional difficulties of rebuilding her life.
Her son Kevin described the uncertainty around her prognosis, saying doctors initially could not determine how far she would recover.
Since then, O'Neal has worked to regain her independence, with family milestones marking key stages in that process.
One significant moment came in June 2025, when she attended Kevin's wedding to actress Fern Cozine in California.
It was her first trip away from home since the stroke five years earlier.
Despite her earlier difficulties with speech and mobility, O'Neal stood before family and friends to deliver a speech during the celebration.
Kevin later recalled the occasion in an interview with Vogue, describing his mother's appearance before guests, including his father, John McEnroe, and his stepmother, Patty Smyth.
The gathering also brought together family members whose relationships had been shaped by O'Neal and McEnroe's divorce in 1992.
O'Neal first rose to international prominence in 1973, starring alongside her father, Ryan O'Neal, in the film Paper Moon.
Her performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at age 10, making her the youngest competitive Oscar winner in history, a record she still holds.
She later appeared in films including The Bad News Bears and Little Darlings.
Her adult life also included struggles with addiction and a complicated relationship with her father, who died in December 2023 at age 82.
