Irvington High School in Fremont, California, has officially canceled its football program for the 2026 season.
The decision comes after a severe shortage of players and a failed six-month search for a new head coach.

The administration informed players and their families about the critical situation. Safety risks were cited as the primary reason for the shutdown.
Former head coach Anthony Jackson stepped down last December after leading the team to a 7-4 record in 2025.
Following his departure, roster numbers dropped sharply.

According to school officials, only 17 to 20 eligible players remained across both junior varsity and varsity teams.
The administration stated that even if a coach and staff were hired, there would not be enough players to safely field a varsity team or complete required summer conditioning.
Transfer Options for Student Athletes
The school district has arranged an alternative plan for student-athletes who still wish to compete. Remaining players can transfer to nearby schools within the same district.

Washington High and Kennedy High are available options. Athletes will remain eligible to play immediately under a hardship waiver.
