The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is proceeding with plans to host the 2027 Basketball World Cup in Qatar as scheduled, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions involving nearby Iran, as reported on Friday, June 5, 2026.
Global basketball officials retain flexibility to alter arrangements if the conflict mandates intervention.

The 32-team flagship tournament remains scheduled to run for roughly two and a half weeks in Doha, beginning on August 27, 2027.
FIBA Secretary General Comments on Preparations
"We have excellent partners in Qatar," said Andreas Zagklis, secretary general of FIBA, during a media roundtable in San Antonio while attending Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
The global governing body is closely monitoring regional stability while the local organizing committee continues logistical preparations.
Qatar, which secured the hosting rights as the sole bidder, marks the first time the tournament will visit the Arab world.
"If things arrive at that spot, I'm sure we will have very good and direct conversations, and we'll find the best possible solution for the players and the fans," Zagklis said.
The tournament will serve as a direct qualifying path for seven countries into the men's basketball event at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
High-level government backing in Doha has insulated the project from recent hostilities, according to basketball officials.
"We have a board meeting of the FIBA and the (local organizing committee) of the World Cup on Monday.
I will get the latest updates," Zagklis said.
