Canada secured its first-ever World Cup Finals victory with a 6-0 win over Qatar in a Group B match on Friday, June 19, 2026.

The match was marred by a severe leg injury to midfielder Ismael Kone and a post-match touchline confrontation.

The Sassuolo midfielder suffered a suspected leg break during the second half following an unlawful tackle by Qatar's Assim Madibo.

Medical personnel treated Kone on the field while teammates formed a protective huddle around him before he was transported to a Vancouver hospital for surgery.

The tackle initially drew a yellow card, but a video assistant referee review upgraded the penalty to a red card.

This ejection left Qatar down to nine players, following an earlier red card issued to Homam Elamin.

The on-field incident triggered a heated dispute between the two coaching benches, which required staff members to be separated.

The tension escalated after the final whistle when Canada head coach Jesse Marsch and Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui engaged in a sharp altercation on the sideline.

Marsch reacted to Lopetegui's comments by raising his arms and walking away, subsequently dismissing the incident during his post-match media appearance.

"I'm not wasting a single second talking about that," said Jesse Marsch, Head Coach of Canada.

The Canadian manager expressed frustration over the opposing bench's arguments against the red card decision, labeling the opposition's defense of the tackle as unusual behavior.

"The player apologised to Ismael," added Marsch.

Following the match, Marsch and several players visited Kone in the hospital.
