Zlatan Ibrahimovic declared that Lionel Messi's World Cup triumph in Qatar definitively settled the long-standing debate over soccer's greatest player, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Swedish striker made the remarks during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, where he discussed the legacies of both icons ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ibrahimovic, who joined Fox Sports as a studio analyst for the tournament, referenced his time as Messi's teammate at Barcelona when asked if he knew both players personally.

"I know one of them," Ibrahimovic replied.

He explained that consistent high-level performances fuel weekly comparisons among fans and pundits, but Messi's international breakthrough in December 2022 changed everything.

"When you are at that level, it's week in, week out. I mean, who has the best performance from the last game?

But I feel after Messi won his World Cup, he put the bar and he closed the door," Ibrahimovic said.

During the Qatar tournament, Messi recorded seven goals and three assists in seven matches, earning the Golden Ball and securing the elusive international title.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo enters the 2026 tournament after a productive stint with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, where he extended his contract through 2027 after scoring 123 goals and providing 24 assists in 142 appearances.

Fox Sports assembled a studio crew including Thierry Henry, Clarence Seedorf, and Carli Lloyd, with network president Brad Zager targeting Ibrahimovic since March to lead unscripted coverage.
