Van der Bij disclosed the tragic development through social media updates while staying in the United States to support Gakpo during the tournament.
“With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support.
Elijah Raphael Gakpo Forever loved. Forever our son,” she wrote.
Following the loss, Van der Bij visited a local church with their first-born son, Samuel. She described a comforting coincidence at a nearby playground.
“We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.
There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah,” she added.
She expressed that the encounter provided spiritual comfort to the family during their bereavement.
“There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away,” she stated.
Gakpo amplified the announcement on his own social media profile to appeal for space from the public and media.
