Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta secured his first-ever career win at the All England Club on Monday.

He advanced after Canada's Denis Shapovalov retired from their first-round match due to a left shoulder injury.

Shapovalov trailed Carreno Busta 6-3, 7-6 (9) before withdrawing. The injury occurred when Shapovalov collided with a courtside barrier late in the second-set tiebreak.

He took a medical timeout but stopped after playing just one more point.

The victory ended an eight-match opening-round losing streak for Carreno Busta at Wimbledon. He had previously struggled on grass at the Grand Slam.

Carreno Busta rose seven spots in the live ATP rankings to provisional world number 64. The win continues his recent comeback after a quarterfinal run at Roland Garros.

Second-Round Matchup

Carreno Busta will face fellow Spaniard Rafa Jodar on Wednesday. Jodar earned his spot by defeating Felix Gill 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in his tournament debut.

This will be the second meeting between the two in less than a month.

At Roland Garros, Jodar came back from two sets down to win after Carreno Busta suffered a shoulder injury.

Despite his progress on grass, Carreno Busta said his main focus for the rest of 2026 is the American hardcourt swing.
