The global aviation industry saw contrasting developments on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, as Avelo Airlines announced an expansion into McKinney National Airport in Texas, while Swiss charter carrier Air Mountain permanently ceased operations due to bankruptcy.

According to a CBS News report, commercial air service from Collin County, Texas, will begin on November 11, 2026, with an inaugural Avelo Airlines flight to Fort Myers, Florida.

The expansion makes McKinney National Airport the fifth main base for the Houston-based airline. Avelo plans to operate 184-seat Boeing 737 aircraft and create over 100 regional jobs.

Avelo Airlines leadership expressed optimism about launching commercial flights from the new North Texas terminal, highlighting strategic benefits for regional travelers.

"Avelo was built for moments like this, and we are thrilled to be the launch and anchor airline at McKinney.

Our everyday low fares, the ease of using DTX, and our consistent industry leading on-time performance are a winning combination for travelers," said Andrew Levy, founder and CEO of Avelo Airlines.

Local officials supported the development, noting that the city council secured alternative infrastructure funding after residents initially voted down a $200 million bond proposal in 2023.

"As growth continues to reshape North Texas, McKinney is playing an increasingly important role in the region's future.

This new service reflects the demand for convenient air travel closer to home and reinforces McKinney's position as a destination for residents, businesses, and investment," said Bill Cox, current Mayor of McKinney.
