Sony has announced plans to close its PlayStation Store digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita in several international markets, starting in 2026 and continuing through July 2027.

According to a report by Game Informer, once the storefronts are shut down, owners of these legacy systems will no longer be able to make new digital purchases.

The company provided a phased timeline: the PS3 store will close in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua starting August 2026, followed by additional Latin American and Middle Eastern nations in late 2026, and all remaining countries in July 2027.

“We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming,” Sony wrote in an official PlayStation Blog post.

“PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.”

Sony explained that it needs to focus resources on newer devices where most users are playing today, as it looks toward the future.

The closure ends a 20-year run for the PS3 storefront, which launched in 2006.

Game Informer noted this is Sony's first time closing a digital store for legacy consoles, following similar moves by Nintendo for the Wii U and 3DS, and Microsoft for the Xbox 360 store.

The announcement comes alongside separate plans by Sony to end production of physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028, and to remove hundreds of purchased Studio Canal movies and TV shows from user libraries due to expiring content licensing agreements.
