ABC is set to begin production on the ninth season of its police procedural drama The Rookie in July, according to an industry update published in June 2026.
The series, starring Nathan Fillion as LAPD Officer John Nolan, received its official renewal in April 2026 after the conclusion of its eighth season.

Journalist Matt Mitovich reported the production timeline through his Matt's Inside Line newsletter.
He noted that the network is maintaining its traditional filming cycle despite scheduling adjustments for the broadcast.
"The midseason ABC procedural is on track to begin filming Season 9 in July, as usual, though an exact start date has not yet been set," Mitovich revealed.
Cliffhanger Resolution and Expanded Cast
The upcoming season will address the cliffhanger from the season 8 finale.
That episode concluded with characters Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen being abducted by associates of an antagonist named Everett shortly after their engagement.

The series will feature an expanded ensemble that currently includes 10 main cast members.
The main cast includes Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, Eric Winter as Tim Bradford, Melissa O'Neil as Lucy Chen, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, Shawn Ashmore as Wesley Evers, Jenna Dewan as Bailey Nune, Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez, Deric Augustine as Miles Penn, and Richard T.
Jones as Wade Grey.
Additionally, ABC has ongoing plans for a new spin-off series titled The Rookie: North.
The network previously attempted a spin-off in 2022 with The Rookie: Feds, which was canceled after a single season.

The new project, set in Pierce County, is written by Alexi Hawley.
