SailLink offers a wind-powered catamaran ferry service from Dover to Boulogne, providing an alternative to standard cross-Channel transit.

The service operates up to five times a week between April and mid-September, with a journey time of four to five hours.

The catamaran carries up to 12 passengers and relies largely on wind power. Passengers can participate in sailing activities like hauling sails or steering.

The vessel features spacious nets at the front, ideal for lounging and dolphin watching.

Helmsman Chris O'Brien describes the experience as meditative. "It's all about tuning into the culture of the sea," he says.

"People find the water, and the meditative experience of sailing, healing."

Convenience for Cyclists and Foot Passengers

One of SailLink's key advantages is its seamless boarding process. Border officials conduct document checks directly on the boat, avoiding long terminal queues.

The catamaran departs from a marina pontoon a 15-minute walk from Dover's train station.

Bicycles can be brought on board easily, making the service attractive for cyclists.

Travelers can continue their journey along the Vélomaritime cycle path toward Cap Gris-Nez or head inland to Saint-Omer.

Passenger Caroline, who cycled down from York, appreciated the change of pace.

"The cycle was hot and unpleasant so we thought maybe we'd just sail from Hull next time, but I'm sold," she says.

"I'm loving it."

Upon arrival in Boulogne, visitors can explore local coastal heritage and museums. Inland, accommodations like Boat'Om, a self-catering barge in Saint-Omer, offer a quiet connection to the waterways.
