A historic crowd of 42,175 spectators witnessed Gotham FC's 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit at Citi Field, setting a new record for the most attended women's sporting event in New York City history.
The match marked a significant milestone for women's soccer, contrasting sharply with the league's past when a 2016 game was played on a small pitch at a minor-league ballpark and was labeled "shocking and embarrassing" by players.

Rose Lavelle scored the decisive goal in the 37th minute with a brilliant curling shot, replicating her key role in last year's final.
The win moved Gotham FC level on points with the Washington Spirit and the Portland Thorns, while San Diego continues to lead the league.
Washington's Trinity Rodman captivated the crowd but failed to convert any of her five shots. Fans throughout the stands wore her No. 2 jersey.
The loudest cheer of the night came in the 63rd minute when Australian striker Sam Kerr made her return to the pitch after signing with Gotham FC following six-and-a-half years at Chelsea.
Kerr previously played for the club during its Sky Blue era, when crowds barely reached 3,000 spectators.
"I feel so spoiled to play at this club, because we keep bringing in incredible players," Lavelle said, highlighting recent major transfers.
Rodman joked about Kerr's return: "I went up to her during a corner and said, 'Welcome back, but chill.'"
