Nissan has launched the fourth-generation Elgrand minivan in Japan, a bold luxury model that takes direct aim at the Toyota Alphard.

American buyers, however, will not get a chance to own it.

The new Elgrand arrives 16 years after its predecessor and marks a clean break from Nissan's current design language.

It features the company's third-generation e-Power hybrid system paired with the e-4orce electric all-wheel-drive system.

Radical Design and Premium Interior

The exterior draws inspiration from the 2023 Hyper Tourer Concept and Nissan's Timeless Japanese Futurism styling. The front grille and daytime running lights give it a concept-car appearance.

Inside, the cabin is anchored by Zero-Gravity recliners with ottomans in top trims.

A 22-speaker Bose audio system, dual 14.3-inch screens, and 64-color ambient lighting add to the luxury feel.

The second row gets captain's chairs with dual-recline backrests, and the seating is stepped progressively across all three rows for better visibility.

Practical touches include easier-access side steps and a half-open sliding-door function.

E-Power Hybrid and Suspension

The e-Power setup combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor. The engine acts solely as a generator while the motor drives the wheels.

Nissan says the system produces more than 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

The Intelligent Dynamic Suspension system monitors the road ahead and adjusts damping in real time. The e-4orce all-wheel-drive system also helps reduce body movement and optimize dynamics.

Nissan sold just 1,163 examples of the outgoing Elgrand in Japan during fiscal year 2025, compared to 81,357 Toyota Alphards.

The company reports more than 6,000 orders for the new model since the end of May, with over 5,000 from retail customers.

The new Elgrand starts at 6.87 million yen (about $42,300) in Japan.
