The milestone was achieved during the fifth T20I against India at The Rose Bowl in Southampton on July 11, 2026.

Buttler smashed 131 runs from 64 deliveries, including 12 boundaries and eight sixes, taking his career total to 4,212 runs.
He surpassed Kohli, who had accumulated 4,188 runs across 125 matches before retiring from the format.
Buttler reached the mark in his 160th T20I appearance, needing 35 more innings than the former Indian captain.
