England's managing director of men's cricket, Rob Key, has suggested that Ben Stokes could make a sensational return to international cricket for the 2027 Ashes series at home against Australia.
Speaking at Lord's on July 31, 2026, Key addressed the possibility of the 35-year-old all-rounder reversing his retirement, which he announced in June following a Test series defeat to New Zealand.

“It would be a brilliant story if he does,” Key said, while confirming that Stokes has not indicated any intention to return.
“No, he hasn't but I wouldn't be surprised. Anything's possible with Ben,” Key added.
Stokes stepped down as captain and retired from international cricket after a 2-1 series loss to New Zealand, a decision that came after he was made unavailable for the second Test due to a midnight curfew breach during celebrations.
The England and Wales Cricket Board subsequently reinstated Joe Root as Test captain and appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as red-ball head coach, replacing Brendon McCullum.
Key dismissed any suggestion that his relationship with Stokes had suffered during these management changes, stating, “No, not at all.
Not as far as I'm concerned.”
He also expressed confidence in the new leadership structure, saying, “In Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum, I think we've got the best two coaches.”
Key defended Fleming's appointment despite his lack of recent red-ball coaching experience, citing his extensive career as an international captain and his long tenure with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
