Argentine star Lionel Messi faced strong backlash after attempting to get Spanish defender Marc Cucurella sent off during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on July 19, 2026.

The incident occurred in the second half following a red card to Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez.

During the protests, Cucurella briefly approached Messi while partially covering his mouth, then quickly lowered his hand.

Messi immediately gestured to referee Slavko Vincic, urging a direct red card under FIFA rules that penalize mouth-covering during altercations.

Officials deemed Cucurella's gesture insufficient for a dismissal.

Spain went on to win the title with an extra-time goal from Ferran Torres.

Former Players Condemn Messi's Actions

Former England defender Lee Dixon criticized Messi's behavior during an ITV broadcast.

"The game has gone if you're getting bookings and red cards for that, to get somebody sent off," Dixon said.

He added: "You shouldn't be such a baby to try and get someone sent off for that; it's ridiculous."

Former England captain Wayne Rooney also condemned the incident. "Argentina play like that, we know that's what they do.
