Rising temperatures near triple-digit marks in Iowa have prompted local health authorities to issue urgent warnings about heat-related illnesses.

The alert specifically targets residents and participants in the statewide RAGBRAI bicycle ride.

Dr. Kelly Krei of MercyOne cautioned that early signs of heat exhaustion—such as excessive sweating, severe headaches, and severe dizziness—require immediate attention to prevent escalation into critical emergencies.

Heat Stroke: A Life-Threatening Condition

Medical experts note that untreated heat exhaustion can rapidly progress to heat stroke, a life-threatening state that occurs when internal body temperature surpasses 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

A key indicator of heat stroke is the complete cessation of sweating.

"Heat stroke can lead to death.

So this is a very, very serious thing, not just for our athletes but also for people going out in the heat of the day," said Dr. Kelly Krei.

To prevent severe complications, medical guidelines recommend limiting direct exposure during peak hours, taking frequent rest breaks, staying hydrated, and allowing the body to gradually acclimate to extreme outdoor temperatures.

Medical professionals in Iowa urge all residents and RAGBRAI cyclists to recognize heat illness symptoms as temperatures approach triple digits.
