ESPN fired analyst and former NFL player Ryan Clark during a commercial break while he was filming a live episode of "NFL Live" via Zoom, triggering widespread criticism across the sports media landscape.
Network executives decided to inform Clark on Monday to notify him before public reports surfaced, preventing him from learning about his job loss through news alerts on his phone.

Clark did not return to the broadcast following the notification. Both he and network officials agreed it was best for him to step off the air.
He was not escorted off any set because he was broadcasting remotely.
Reports indicated that his colleagues' visible nodding on camera during his final segment was simply agreement with his points, not prior knowledge of his termination.
Former colleagues noted Clark had faced internal tension with peers prior to his departure.

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith addressed the network's decision during an episode of his podcast, expressing strong disapproval.
