The series, created by showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether, follows probationary FBI agent Alice Black.

She pursues a chameleonic serial killer named Catherine Grace, who targets wealthy men through manufactured intimacy.

The narrative explores institutional corruption, abuse, and female rage. It expands upon the premise of the 1987 film Black Widow.

Emmy Rossum on Her Role and Motivation

Lead actress Emmy Rossum discussed her new role and motivation for joining the production during an interview with Extra.

“I really like shifting into new places that I haven't explored before,” she said.

Rossum discovered the 1987 film Black Widow, featuring Theresa Russell, an actress she worked with at age 14.

This inspired her to pursue the series adaptation.

“Liz Meriwether wanted to come aboard and write it and then after kind of a couple of years of crafting the scripts, we got to make it,” Rossum added.

Her character Alice is a former detective trying to rebuild her career at the bottom rung of the FBI after personal violence.

“Alice is a former detective who left because of the violence in her life and started over at the FBI… She doesn't believe that she can ever get justice for herself, but she very intensely and passionately wants to get justice on a larger scale for others,” Rossum explained.
