The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill placed football program general manager Michael Lombardi on immediate paid administrative leave on Monday, July 27, 2026.
The decision comes just weeks before the Tar Heels open their 2026 season against TCU in Dublin, Ireland.

University officials confirmed the personnel decision via an email announcement on Monday morning.
They withheld additional specific details regarding the exact cause of the disciplinary action due to school policy.
"Michael Lombardi, general manager for the Carolina football program, is on paid administrative leave, effective immediately," the university said in an email statement.
School officials emphasized that strict protocols govern ongoing human resources evaluations. Staff are prohibited from making public comments about internal employment decisions.
"As is standard procedure with personnel matters, leadership, staff, and student-athletes are prohibited from addressing this topic further, and has no reflection on the merits," the school said in a statement.
HR Complaint and Lombardi's Role
According to ESPN reporting, the university's decision stems from a formal human resources complaint filed against Lombardi by a former UNC front office employee.
Lombardi rejoined head coach Bill Belichick in Chapel Hill in December 2024 after previous front-office stints together with the New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns.
