Emirates President Sir Tim Clark announced at the Farnborough Air Show that the Dubai-based carrier will refuse its initial batch of 10 or 11 Boeing 777-9 aircraft.
The decision stems from severe manufacturing delays and extensive design modifications that have rendered the early airframes outdated.

The rejected wide-body jets were originally produced around 2019 under an order first placed in 2013.
Clark noted that years of subsequent engineering adjustments have made the early models structurally impractical for the airline's long-haul service expectations.
"We're not taking that batch, and that's it," said Clark.
To maintain operational standardization, the airline refused the early models because they would require extensive rework to match current delivery specifications.
Clark argued that taking the airframes in early 2027 would leave the carrier operating half-life aircraft on day one.
Addressing the physical condition of the early-build models parked without engines, Clark suggested Boeing should cut its losses rather than attempt expensive retrofits.
"Heinz would be interested," he said, implying the jets are only fit for scrap.
Despite the initial rejection, Emirates remains the largest customer for the 777X program, holding 270 total orders.
The carrier expects its first standardized 777-9 delivery in the second quarter of 2027, provided certification and extended-range twin-engine operational performance protocols are completed.
Interest in a Stretched Variant
Clark expressed interest in a potential stretched variant beyond the -9 model. "As far as the '777-10' is concerned…we do want a bigger one," he said.
