According to the U. S.
Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications Department, the peak occurs during daylight hours.
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are the prime viewing times as the moon rises above the eastern horizon.
Regional timing for the lunar peak varies across time zones, reaching 9:35 a. m.
CDT and 7:36 a. m.
PDT.
Because the peak takes place during the day, observers in cities like Houston, Oakland, and Memphis will get their best views low in the east-southeast sky shortly after sunset or during the early morning hours before moonset.
The moon will also appear nearly full on Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Origin of the Name
The annual event earns its moniker from traditional Native American designations, specifically from the Algonquin people, as recorded by The Old Farmer's Almanac.
The name references the time of year when young male deer, or bucks, rapidly regrow their antlers after shedding them in late winter.
Other traditional designations for July's full moon include the Thunder Moon, Hay Moon, the Cree's Feather Moulting Moon, and the Tlingit's Salmon Moon.

Astrologically, this year's Buck Moon occurs in the air sign of Aquarius, directly opposite Leo.
