Merrie England, a well-known coffee shop chain in Huddersfield, has shut down all seven of its outlets after 60 years of operation.
The immediate closure was announced on July 28, 2026, citing rising costs and reduced customer footfall.

The business was founded in 1966 by Keith and Anita Hanselman. It operated locations in Huddersfield town center, Oakes, Brighouse, and Halifax.
When sold in July 2024 to new owners led by Gary Conway, Merrie England employed 84 staff.
Known for its traditional menu of hot beef sandwiches, toasted teacakes, egg custard, and apple pie, the chain was a community staple.
Poet Laureate Simon Armitage even wrote a poem honoring the staff's iconic scarlet aprons.
In a statement on its website, Merrie England explained the closure was driven by sustained increases in costs, including goods, business rates, energy, staffing, and government policies.
The company also noted a decline in customer spending and foot traffic, with many unable or unwilling to pay higher prices needed for survival.
"This has been an incredibly difficult decision, reached after facing a sustained increase in the cost of goods, business rates, energy costs, and the wider rising costs associated with staffing and government policy," the statement said.

Expressing gratitude, the company added, "After 60 years of serving our customers, we want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us over the decades.
Your loyalty, kindness, and custom have meant so much to us."
On Facebook, the company appealed for understanding and urged respectful comments, acknowledging the impact on employees.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of Merrie England.
After 60 years, this has been an incredibly difficult decision, and our thoughts are especially with the teams across our seven shops who have lost their jobs," the post said.
"We know people may have strong feelings, but we kindly ask that comments are kept respectful.

There are real people, families, staff, customers and suppliers affected by this news," the company added.
