The ABC police drama "The Rookie" filmed an alternate season eight finale because the cast and crew were unsure if the show would be canceled or renewed, actor Eric Winter revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

ABC eventually renewed the series for a ninth season in April 2026, but the alternate ending was shot before the official decision was announced.

"We didn't know when we wrapped last season if we would ever come back," said Winter, who plays Sergeant Tim Bradford.

"We even shot an alternate ending to the show" that "would've been different."

Winter declined to share specific plot details about the unaired version to avoid spoilers.

"It's just incredible! No show's growing eight seasons on – they're all going down.

We're a true unicorn," Winter said, noting that gaining new viewers into a ninth season is rare.

Winter discussed his character's transition into leadership roles, calling it both a blessing and a challenge.

"When you're doing paperwork and dealing with the higher-ups, it's a totally different ballgame," he said.

He also reflected on the slow-burn romance between Bradford and Lucy Chen, played by Melissa O'Neil. "That's why fans are gravitating towards it," Winter said.

The season eight finale aired in May 2026 and ended on a major cliffhanger involving the kidnapping of Bradford and Chen after their engagement.

The finale set record digital viewership numbers in the United States and topped streaming charts internationally, including on New Zealand's TVNZ+.

Winter expressed enthusiasm about the show's global reach and hinted at a possible crossover with "NCIS: Sydney."

Showrunner Alexi Hawley confirmed to TV Insider that the cliffhanger was planned early in season eight, setting high stakes for when season nine premieres in January 2027.
