Gerrit Cole tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits, as the New York Yankees defeated the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Tuesday night in Chicago.
The win was the Yankees' fifth in six games, improving their record to 61-46 and moving them within 1.5 games of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.

New York broke through in the second inning. Anthony Volpe doubled off the glove of center fielder Tristan Peters to drive in a run.
Max Schuemann then added a two-run double that bounced over third base, scoring Volpe.
Cole, making his 12th start since returning from Tommy John surgery on May 22, struck out seven and walked two.
He improved to 4-5 on the season.

Chicago's best chance against Cole came in the fourth. Munetaka Murakami doubled, and two walks loaded the bases, but Peters popped out to end the threat.
Murakami extended his career-best on-base streak to 14 games since returning from the injured list on July 10.
White Sox starter Anthony Kay (7-5) allowed three runs on five hits over 5.1 innings, striking out seven.
Chicago rallied in the ninth when Chase Meidroth hit a two-run homer off closer David Bednar. Bednar then struck out Everson Pereira to earn his 22nd save.

The series continues Wednesday with Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler (10-6, 2.07 ERA) facing White Sox right-hander Davis Martin (9-5, 3.49 ERA).
