The Boston Red Sox have placed infielder Nick Sogard at the top of the batting order for Friday's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.

Sogard, 28, earns his first leadoff assignment of the season just two days after being recalled from Triple-A Worcester.

He will start at second base in his 14th major league game of the year, while Jarren Duran, the usual leadoff hitter, moves down to the eighth spot.

Interim manager Chad Tracy explained the decision, citing Sogard's disciplined approach and consistent at-bats since his return.

"You can't ignore since he came up, the at-bat quality that he has had. … You just can't ignore it.

That doesn't mean it sticks that way.

Durb could get going and things could change, but right now, those at-bats are good and we're starting to put up some runs," Tracy said.

Tracy also praised Sogard's overall game intelligence and fundamentals.

"Really good baseball player, high-level IQ, really good instincts, knows what he's doing, knows when to bunt," he added.

Left-hander Ranger Suárez will start on the mound for Boston against the Dodgers' right-handed opener Edgardo Henriquez. This marks the first meeting between the two teams this season.
