Microsoft has quietly distributed a new OneDrive Photos application to Windows 11 users worldwide through a recent OneDrive sync client update in late July 2026.
The app includes AI-powered facial recognition that automatically scans local and cloud files.

Despite Microsoft framing it as an experimental test for specific groups, multiple production computers received it, as reported by ZDNET and Windows Latest.
Microsoft clarified that the app is generally available, with a preview for Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel.
The deployment came via a OneDrive update, not a separate install.
Privacy and Data Handling
The feature categorizes individuals based on visual biometrics, prompting privacy questions.

Microsoft assured that face grouping is visible only to the account owner and users can opt out anytime.
The company confirmed that facial scans are not used to train AI models, and all data is deleted after 30 days.

According to MakeUseOf, the automatic deployment creates storage redundancies for Samsung Galaxy users, as Samsung will end its Gallery-to-OneDrive sync on September 30, 2026, pushing users to alternatives like Google Photos or Dropbox.
