An underwater drone searching for a snowmobile in Maine discovered a 1974 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 resting 55 feet below the surface of Sebago Lake.
Jason Smith was exploring the lake with his drone when he spotted the muscle car.
He had been hoping to find an old snowmobile he had seen on a previous trip.
The Camaro Z28 was located in the channel between Frye Island and the mainland. Authorities recovered the vehicle and identified it through its VIN.
How Did the Camaro End Up Underwater?
Investigators are working to determine how the car ended up in the lake.
One theory suggested it slipped off the Frye Island ferry, but ferry operators dismissed that possibility.
Another theory involves insurance fraud, but proving that after decades is difficult.
The most likely explanation is that the car was driven onto the frozen lake and broke through the ice.
The car appeared surprisingly well-preserved given its time underwater, though it was damaged during recovery. Authorities are still trying to identify the original owner.
