The San Francisco 49ers are actively searching for a dependable backup running back to share the offensive workload with All-Pro Christian McCaffrey ahead of the 2026 NFL season.
Team officials are prioritizing the management of McCaffrey's touches after he recorded a career-high 432 opportunities during the 2025 campaign.

Concerns have been raised due to his history of injuries, as he has only completed back-to-back seasons with 100 or more carries once since 2019.
Coach Shanahan Emphasizes Need for Support
Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the situation on Monday, highlighting the importance of preserving McCaffrey's productivity throughout the entire season.
His comments were reported by Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
"In order to have [McCaffrey] be as good as he can be throughout the whole year, we've got to get someone to help him," Shanahan said.
Jordan James currently holds the inside track for the second-string role, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. com.

He will compete against Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor, Sincere McCormick, and third-round rookie Kaelon Black.
The competition comes after last year's backup, Brian Robinson, departed for Atlanta.
James gained momentum during the 49ers' blowout loss to Seattle in the NFC divisional round, rushing six times for 28 yards and catching one pass for seven yards.
In contrast, Guerendo appeared in 14 regular-season games last year without recording a single offensive snap.
