Formula 1 has shifted the start time of the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix to avoid overlapping with the Indianapolis 500.

The race at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will now begin at 4:00 p. m.

local time on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

Traditionally, the 70-lap event started at 2:00 p. m.

local time.

Schedule Change Driven by Regionalization

The conflict emerged after Formula 1 moved the Canadian Grand Prix from its usual mid-June slot to late May.

This change aims to streamline logistics by placing the race directly after the Miami Grand Prix.

As a result, the Monaco Grand Prix has been pushed back to June 5–7, 2026, surrendering its traditional late-May weekend.

The Indianapolis 500 remains scheduled for a 12:45 p. m.

local time start.

According to reports, the new timing creates a three-hour window after the green flag in Indiana, minimizing potential overlap.

However, a minor conflict could still occur if weather or extended cautions delay the oval race.

The decision is driven by audience optimization, as a direct head-to-head would split television viewership across the critical North American market.
