Unsettled skies threaten to disrupt the Memorial Day Weekend racing schedule as rain forecasts loom over both the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation at Indianapolis is expected to hold off until approximately 2 p.

m. ET, following partly sunny skies with temperatures peaking near 80 degrees.

Meteorologists project the final showers to clear the Indianapolis area between 4 p. m.

and 6 p. m.

ET, which could provide an open window for the event to proceed securely.

Inclement weather has impacted this event previously, notably when thunderstorms delayed the 2024 edition of the Indianapolis 500 for four hours before the green flag finally waved.

Challenges at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Similar weather challenges are developing 600 miles south in North Carolina, where cloudy conditions and a minor chance of scattered showers are forecast for the 67th Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Hourly forecasts indicate the Charlotte region faces at least a 60 percent probability of precipitation at any point during the scheduled race, though temperatures will remain comfortable in the 70s before dropping to the 60s at night.

The scheduling of the Charlotte event presents additional complications, as track conditions can deteriorate rapidly once night falls and moisture moves into the area.

Persistent rainfall has already impacted operations at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend, forcing officials to postpone the Truck Series race multiple times.

Driver Katherine Legge is monitoring both regional weather forecasts closely due to her plans to complete double duty by competing in Indianapolis before traveling to Concord, North Carolina, for the night race.

A major weather delay at the Indianapolis 500 would jeopardize her tight travel timeline, whereas a delay at Charlotte could provide additional time to make the transition between the two events.
