Houston Gamblers quarterback Hunter Dekkers is set to lead his team into a high-stakes, prime-time home rematch against the St. Louis Battlehawks on Sunday, May 24, 2026, to keep their UFL playoff hopes alive.
Dekkers recently returned from a five-week shoulder injury to spark the Gamblers offense.
Following a close loss to the Orlando Storm, he guided Houston to a 23-16 upset victory on the road in St. Louis last Saturday.
The victory improved Houston to a 3-5 record, giving them a slim mathematical chance at securing a spot in the four-team postseason tournament.
To qualify, Houston must win its final two regular-season games, continuing with this weekend's rare consecutive matchup against the 5-3 Battlehawks.
The Houston offense averages 233 passing yards and 21 points per game when Dekkers plays.
Without him, those metrics drop sharply to 158.4 passing yards and 17 points per game.
Dekkers has completed 62.5% of his throws for 698 yards and two touchdowns this year.
His statistical performance outpaces Houston's other quarterbacks, who have combined for a 55% completion rate, 12 sacks, and five fumbles.
Sumlin on Dekkers' Growth
Gamblers head coach Kevin Sumlin addressed the development of his young quarterback during a midweek press conference, acknowledging both the player's arm talent and the areas where he still needs to mature.
"He continues to improve. Obviously he has shown that he is talented and can make the throws all over the field.
I think the biggest step he's got to make is just making sure that he's given us a chance and not — and cut down the negative yardage plays, right?
Whether it's taking a sack or throwing an interception," said Sumlin.
Sumlin emphasized that the quarterback is still shaking off rust after missing significant time due to his early-season injury and limited prior playing experience.
"There are things in between that I think seeing the field and being able to adjust and make checks and do things like that.
I think he can, and he's getting better at it because he hadn't played a lot," Sumlin added.
The head coach also expressed caution regarding back-to-back games against the same opponent. Sumlin noted that familiarity does not automatically guarantee a strategic edge on Sunday.
"I don't know that you want to play a team back-to-back all the time," explained Sumlin.
"You look at some of these head-to-head games, the team who wins the first one has struggled in the second one.
So I don't know what the advantage is."
Dekkers Takes Accountability
Reflecting on his individual performance after the narrow Week 7 defeat against Orlando, Dekkers openly assumed accountability for the critical mistakes that cost his team the game.
"Being the first game back, I felt alright. Assessing my performance, I feel like I lost us that game.
Throwing an interception for seven points, and then throwing those two passes at the end of the game.
If you give me 100 more of those throws, I'll make them every time. Just something that's going to be a hard pill to swallow for a while.
I've got 24 hours, and then I need to move on to St. Louis," said Dekkers.
Houston wide receiver Jontre Kirklin expressed high confidence in the offensive skill players. Kirklin highlighted the collective speed and conceptual understanding present within the current receiving room.
"All I can say is it's explosive.
It's a lot of speed in the room, a lot of talent, a lot of guys with high football IQ," said Kirklin.
Kirklin added that the roster recognizes the narrow margin for error during the final stretch of the schedule, stressing the absolute necessity of execution.
"We basically need to win out, for real, for real, if you want me to be honest," Kirklin said.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p. m.
CT at Shell Energy Stadium, with the television broadcast airing nationally on ESPN2.
