The Kitchener Rangers secured a direct spot in the Memorial Cup final after defeating the Chicoutimi Saguenéens 3-2 on Tuesday night.

The Ontario Hockey League champions improved their record to 3-0 and will enjoy a four-day break before Sunday's championship game.

The Saguenéens suffered their second defeat in three games and must wait for the outcome of Wednesday's matchup between the Everett Silvertips and the Kelowna Rockets to determine their playoff fate.

Chicoutimi's situation was further complicated by defenseman Jordan Tourigny, who was ejected in the third period after receiving a major penalty for kicking Christian Humphreys.

Kitchener head coach Jussi Ahokas expressed strong frustration over the incident, calling it cowardly hockey that does not align with the team's values.

Prior to the matchup, Chicoutimi assistant coach Félix Bibeau reflected on his own experiences winning the Memorial Cup as a player in 2019.

He noted similarities between the current Kitchener squad and the talented Guelph team he faced seven years ago.

Bibeau said the memories are beautiful and that the experience changed his life, becoming a turning point in his career.

Transitioning from playing to coaching has brought a change in perspective, shifting his focus from individual performance to group development alongside head coach Yanick Jean and assistant Olivier Bouchard.

Bibeau emphasized that his coaching staff works collectively to provide solutions and support for the players throughout the demanding season.

He added that witnessing the team celebrate together and seeing the fulfillment of their hard work since August is the most rewarding part of his job.

Bibeau credited his approach to the various mentors and coaches who guided him throughout his playing career.

Chicoutimi head coach Yanick Jean praised Bibeau's ability to utilize his past experiences effectively when communicating with the junior players.

On the ice, the game remained tight until the second period when Luca Romano scored the opening goal for Kitchener, followed quickly by a Sam O'Reilly goal to double the lead.

Chicoutimi responded with a goal from Émile Ricard, assisted by Nathan Lecompte and Christophe Berthelot.

Kitchener extended their lead early in the third period with a goal from Jack Pridham.

Although Mavrick Lachance scored a second goal for Chicoutimi following an assist from Emmanuel Vermette, the Saguenéens could not find the equalizer before the final buzzer.
