Team Penske's Josef Newgarden won the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, June 8, 2026.
The race was interrupted by rain and two red flags.
Newgarden overtook Marcus Ericsson on lap 177 and held on to win by 0.6613 seconds.
It was his sixth career victory at the short oval in Madison, Illinois.
Christian Rasmussen of Ed Carpenter Racing finished third. Rinus VeeKay, driving for Juncos Hollinger Racing, placed fourth after starting 13th.
Rain Disrupts Strategy
The 260-lap race started 20 minutes early due to incoming weather. Two rain delays forced neutralizations, with the first lasting 40 minutes.
A second brief shower altered team strategies. Championship leader Alex Palou ran out of fuel in the pit lane and dropped two laps behind.
VeeKay recovered from a practice crash in turn three to qualify 13th. Excellent pit stops moved his No. 76 Chevrolet into the top five.
He challenged Rasmussen for third after the final restart but could not pass. The fourth-place finish is his best result of the season.
VeeKay's Season Best
VeeKay now has three top-10 finishes in 2026: ninth in St. Petersburg, sixth at the Indianapolis 500, and fourth at Gateway.
He earned 175 points and sits 13th in the championship.
"We had a good evening," VeeKay said. "We had good pace and could work through traffic.
Early on, some things didn't go our way, but we made the right choices during the final pit stops."
He noted that understeer hampered his final push. "I had a bit too much understeer at the end.
When I was alongside Christian, I couldn't get past. As a driver, you're disappointed with fourth, but the team did excellent work."
VeeKay expressed pride in beating larger teams. "I'm especially happy we could show our speed and strength as a relatively small, young team.
Right now, we're beating the 'big boys'."
The result is Juncos Hollinger Racing's best since Conor Daly's podium in Milwaukee in 2024. "It was a tight weekend with great pit stops.
We beat a number of top teams, so I'm very proud of the entire crew.
We can build on this for the second half of the season," VeeKay said.
The IndyCar series now takes a brief break. The next race, the XPEL Grand Prix of Road America, is scheduled for Sunday, June 21, 2026.
