England manager Thomas Tuchel has dismissed the notion that his side enters the 2026 World Cup as heavy favorites, urging a measured and collective approach to the tournament.

Speaking in Miami on June 9, 2026, ahead of England's final warm-up match against Costa Rica, Tuchel emphasized that the team's recent near-misses do not automatically elevate them to favorite status.

"We can't be one of the favourites as we haven't won it for so long," said Tuchel, referencing England's last major trophy in 1966 and their runner-up finishes at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

Step-by-Step Mentality

Tuchel stressed the importance of focusing on each stage of the competition rather than looking too far ahead.

"If we want to reach the top of the mountain we go step-by-step otherwise we will get distracted," he said.

The German coach noted that England's recent tournament experience—semi-finals and finals—shows they are close, but fine margins and luck will determine success.

"Once you reach a quarter-final you can win any competition and go all the way," Tuchel added.

Squad Depth and Fitness Updates

Tuchel provided updates on key players, confirming that Bukayo Saka is being carefully managed after an Achilles injury in March.

"We still have to take a little bit of care for Bukayo," said Tuchel, adding that the Arsenal winger is being gradually built up.

Noni Madueke, Declan Rice, and Eberechi Eze are fully available, while John Stones received high praise for his versatility and readiness.

"He offers a lot as a player at the highest level and is a defender of the highest quality," Tuchel said of Stones.

Team Over Individuals

When asked about Jude Bellingham's role, Tuchel rejected the idea that England relies on any single player.

"We have a lot of proof we can win football matches without Jude," he said, adding that "Jude will not win this World Cup alone."

Tuchel highlighted the depth of the squad, noting that big players like Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Bukayo Saka may have to accept bench roles at times.

"Some of them will be on in the end. Some of them we will need in extra time.

Some will take a decisive penalty," he explained.

England face Costa Rica on Wednesday before a closed-door match against Miami FC and then their Group L opener against Croatia on June 17.
