Pakistan recovered from an early collapse to set England a target of 303 in the opening match of their ODI tri-series campaign in Rawalpindi, finishing on 302 for 9.

Hasan Nawaz struck a career-best 79 and Arafat Minhas made a maiden international half-century of 59 to lift the hosts on a good batting surface.

England captain Harry Brook elected to field, and his bowlers made an immediate impact with the new ball.

Early Wickets and a Middle-Order Recovery

Gus Atkinson dismissed Fakhar Zaman with the first delivery of the match, as Zaman clipped the ball to Joe Root at midwicket.

Sonny Baker then reduced Pakistan to 31 for 2 when Sam Curran caught Saim Ayub at backward square leg after the batter attempted to pull a short delivery.

Will Jacks bowled Babar Azam through the gap between bat and pad after beating the batter several times outside the edge.

Salman Agha, who had scored 107 against Sri Lanka two days earlier, managed only 16 before sweeping a low full toss from Adil Rashid to Atkinson at wide fine leg.

England had Pakistan at 81 for 4 in the 19th over, but missed catching opportunities allowed the hosts to rebuild.

Nawaz changed the momentum upon arrival, launching Rashid's first delivery to the boundary for six.

He built a 52-run partnership with Saad Baig before Atkinson dismissed the 19-year-old with a short ball.

Nawaz reached his half-century from 46 deliveries and struck four of Pakistan's five sixes in his 74-ball innings.

His stay ended when Jamie Overton bowled him with a yorker that struck the base of the stumps as Nawaz moved toward the leg side.

Minhas then accelerated, striking three boundaries in an over from Curran, while Faheem Ashraf added momentum with consecutive boundaries against Jacks and Rashid.

A 12-run over against Root helped Pakistan strengthen their position in the closing stages.

Minhas survived several chances before reaching his fifty from 53 balls with a cover drive against Baker.

Curran was unable to complete a low-edge catch when Minhas had scored 12, and two further opportunities went unconverted later in the innings.

Baker eventually dismissed Minhas when an attacking shot went to Brook at mid-off, finishing with career-best figures of 3 for 65.

Curran later removed Ashraf, caught at deep midwicket, before Baker had Naseem Shah caught to complete his three-wicket haul.

Ashraf made 39, and Pakistan captain Shaheen Afridi contributed an unbeaten 10 from five balls to push the total beyond 300.

England entered the contest after winning their recent one-day series against Sri Lanka 2-1, but the chase in Rawalpindi presents a substantial target.

The source noted that England had not successfully completed a chase of more than 300 since June 2025.
