The Los Angeles Dodgers starting rotation has thrown 375 2/3 innings through June 2026, leading the major leagues and marking a sharp turnaround from last season, according to FanGraphs and Yahoo Sports.

The increased durability from starters has significantly reduced the burden on the bullpen, with Dodgers relievers combining for just 206 2/3 innings — the fewest of any bullpen in baseball.

Six-Man Rotation Strategy

Manager Dave Roberts implemented a six-man rotation to manage workloads, leveraging the unique roster flexibility provided by two-way player Shohei Ohtani alongside Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Justin Wrobleski, Emmet Sheehan, Roki Sasaki, and Eric Lauer.

This approach contrasts sharply with the 2025 season, when injuries forced the Dodgers to use 40 different pitchers and their bullpen threw the most innings in the majors.

Despite missing injured All-Stars Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, the rotation leads MLB with 8.3 WAR, contributing to a 7.5-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West.

"Obviously, if you get length out of your starters, that's always a good thing," Roberts said.

He noted that managing starter lanes benefits both short-term stability and long-term postseason health, provided the rotation maintains its current performance.

"It's always kind of contingent on the starters doing what they've been doing," Roberts added.

However, a recent setback occurred when Sheehan was pulled after allowing two runs and throwing 36 pitches in the second inning of a 13-5 loss to the Angels.

The early exit forced the bullpen to cover extensive innings, and the game quickly got out of hand after successive multi-run frames by the relief staff.

"Just frustrating," Sheehan said. "Definitely couldn't put guys away.

Not efficient. Not good all around."

Roberts immediately elected to protect the young arm from further strain. "I just didn't feel comfortable getting him past the 40-pitch mark," he said.

The coaching staff then attempted to stretch out subsequent relief appearances to preserve the bullpen for the upcoming road trip.

"I tried to extend him to kind of shorten the game," Roberts explained.

FanGraphs statistics confirm that the six active rotation members have maintained highly effective individual metrics despite the adjusted schedules.

Ohtani leads with a 2.67 FIP and 2.2 WAR, while Yamamoto has a 3.38 FIP and 2.0 WAR.

The Dodgers travel next to Pittsburgh and Chicago for a six-game road trip, with catcher Will Smith listed as day-to-day due to a stiff neck.
